NEW TUNES: Thee Baby Cuffs w/ The M-Tet on Raza del Soul

Sweet soul, Chicano style! Thee Baby Cuffs, a harmony group out of San Jose's East Side, team with members of the Bay Area-based M-Tet backing them to make this cover of a 1970 soul tune "Where Did Peace Go" (by Larry Saunders). Retitled "Where Did Our Pride Go", this reworded cover includes a dig at Donald Trump within! There's some sweet voices and nice Hammond organ. JJ Johnson / Jan 22, 1924 - Feb 4, 2001

JJ Johnson / Jan 22, 1924 - Feb 4, 2001

Great jazz trombonist/composer JJ Johnson worked in the bebop scene at a time when the slide trombone was not featured much. His ease in which he added the 'bone into the bop language is recognized as pioneering. Played with Dizzy, Basie, Benny Carter, Bird, Miles, Illinois Jacquet, Sonny Rollins, Mingus, and others as well as his popular and inventive duel-trombone group with Kai Winding. He also contributed work as a composer of film scores, such as "Across 110th Street". Some consider him the greatest jazz trombonist of all time.

His career was mostly spent with Ellington and Harry James. "Caravan" happens to be one of my very favorite songs.

Sam Cooke / Jan 22, 1931 - Nov 11, 1964

There would be no soul music without Sam Cooke's sweet gospel-reared voice and his many impactful hits, such as "You Send Me", "Another Saturday Night", "Chain Gang", "Twistin' The Night Away", "Shake" (all composed by Cooke himself) and many others. Born in Clarksdale, Mississippi and grown up in Chicago, Sam was a member of the great gospel group The Soul Stirrers before transitioning to pop music (at first under an alias). He was a pioneer everythingman of black artists, as he founded his own record label and took care of his own business, which included production, composing, artist management, musical...
