RIP. Jaki Liebezeit, Founding Member & Drummer of Can

Jaki Liebezeit, founding member, drummer of Can, and human metronome has passed from pneumonia. (May 26, 1938 - Jan 22, 2017). After playing free-jazz in Germany in the mid-to-late '60s, including an ensemble led by Manfred Schoof, as well as with Globe Unity Orchestra (with a young Peter Brotzmann on sax!) he decided to go with a disciplined "motorik" beat. Indeed, Can are synonymous with the "Krautrock" history. From Can / Spoon Records' official social media announcement: It is with great sadness we have to announce that Jaki passed away this morning from sudden pneumonia. NEW TUNES: Raja Kassis & HumanBeing - Don't Leave (Doumala Baayi)

Beirut-born guitarist Raja Kassis (a veteran of not only Antibalas, Seun Kuti, Angelique Kidjo & others, but also of several Senegalese touring ensembles) and his band HumanBeing deliver a new cut “Don’t Leave (Doumala Baayi)”. A gorgeous mbalax tune, it's an instrumental cover of a popular classic of Senegalese music originally recorded by N'dongo Lo. The tune was a favorite of the band's live set and was recorded back in 2014 but has finally seen release. The track features members of N'dongo Lo's band, as well as Daptone/Ikebe Shakedown horns. Roots percussion, sabar drum and marimba with stunning guitar, this...

NEW TUNES: "Open Marriage" by My Education

NEW TUNES: "Open Marriage" by My Education

Check out this cool cinematic-psych jam by Austin-based septet My Education. I really dig the guitar and the viola and pedal steel add a good feeling. Kinda brings to mind a Texan take on Ghost Box Orchestra or Loop. Formed in '99, the band have released five albums and several experimental collaborations, as well as some soundtrack work (including Murnau's Sunrise). A new full-length album, Schiphol, is on the way. Band website

VIDEO: C.A.M.P.O.S. - Teosinte, from "Miracles & Criminals"

Here is another in a series of videos for tunes off of the Miracles & Criminals 2xLP by C.A.M.P.O.S., available now from the Peace & Rhythm webshop and wholesale from Forced Exposure. "Teosinte' might be one of the purest and most psychedelic songs of the year; it’s a heady track named for wild Mesoamerican corn and imbued with an almost ancient feeling somewhere among the electric guitars. A call of “Teosinte!” speaks to and from the soul while synths ramp up and launch the whole song into the stars." - Adriane Pontecorvo, PopMatters Purchase the vinyl here. Like CAMPOS on...
