Ian Dury / May 12, 1942 - March 27, 2000

Cockney-accented singer/songwriter/actor Ian Dury was a great punk poet, talented lyricist and cult hero. After getting polio at 8, he went to a school for the disabled that "toughened" him up. Indeed he strutted the stage with confidence, despite the handicap. His first band was Kilburn and the High Roads, who toured with The Who and broke up in '75. His next band was the entertaining music-hall spirited Ian Dury & the Blockheads and they had some lasting hits (mostly in the UK) of the new wave era. Their music was influenced by funk, reggae, disco and jazz and Dury...

Bernie Worrell / April 19, 1944 - June 24, 2016

Classically-trained keyboardist Bernie Worrell has his place established as a major innovator in the Funk with Parliament-Funkadelic, with whom he played from about 1970 into the early '80s, and contributing to projects of other members of the mob. He brought the Bach to the Funk. He spent the '80s as a member of the Talking Heads and beyond that found an incredible amount of creative work with superproducer Bill Laswell. In his later years he was a staple on the jamband scene with Les Claypool, Govt Mule and others. A musical prodigy from New Jersey, he was playing piano by...

TWISTED: Maggot Brain Special!

TWISTED: Maggot Brain Special!

In honor of the birthday of the great psych-funk guitarist Eddie Hazel, he of Funkadelic fame, here's a few assorted renditions of his signature emo-metal tune. It's astounding how many versions there are. While they are all pretty faithful, the range of different types of artists covering it is amazing. As such, I have included everyone from blues icon Buddy Guy to new age piano, famous rock stars to underground psych bands, alt-country to P-Funk related projects. You can decide for yourself which ones are worthy. This one, from the often boring French band AIR, possibly my fave cover of...

Eddie Hazel / April 10, 1950 - Dec 23, 1992

Happy birthday to the one-and-only "Maggot Brain", the funk-rock guitar god for Funkadelic, Eddie Hazel! Brooklyn-born, he grew up in Plainfield NJ, learning guitar as a kid and singing in church with future P-Funk bandmate Billy "Bass" Nelson. As teenagers the pair were working on the local Jersey scene. In '67 Nelson hooked up with the still-local group The Parliaments, led by George Clinton, for a tour, with Hazel joining soonafter. After securing drummer Tiki Fullwood from the Philadelphia scene, the group relocated to Detroit and became Parliament. Parliament's classic first album, Osmium, came out in '70 with the Funkadelic...

Wilson Pickett / March 18, 1941 - Jan 19, 2006

Wilson Pickett / March 18, 1941 - Jan 19, 2006

Singer, composer and soul music icon, the wicked Wilson Pickett came out of the Detroit churches and joined the infamous Falcons (including Mack Rice & Eddie Floyd). Pickett co-wrote and sang lead on their classic proto-soul tune "I Found A Love" from '59. He then wrote "If You Need Me", which became a big hit for Solomon Burke. Starting in '65 he belted out some huge hits of his own. "In The Midnight Hour", a tune he was co-composer of, was recorded at Stax, "Land of 1000 Dances", "Mustang Sally", "Funky Broadway", "Hey Jude" (featuring Duane Allman) and "Don't Knock...
